A GTO is a classic American muscle car. The name "GTO" came from the marketing department at Pontiac who were told to use a 3 letter name for the car. The official definition for the abbreviation "GTO" is that it stands for "Gran Turismo Omalegatto", which was coined by Ferrari in their like-named car. Pontiac, however, did not intend to call the car a GTO until they were told to add a letter to the "GT" abbreviation. The "O" was added, thus the GTO was born.
