CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THIS 1970 PONTIAC GTO ENGINE VIN STAMP LOOKS FAKE?

Asked by jonleonbass Sep 01, 2010 at 01:23 PM about the 1970 Pontiac GTO

Question type: General

The font looks a bit suspect to me...a bit "fancy" if you will...
Hoping someone that has seen a few of these can chime in.
Alot of the car seems legit.....but not sure on the font here.
  Thanks...

It should look simialr to this: http://www.pontiaczone.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=14599&stc=1&d=1197355010 There is a second partial VIN is stamped on the driver side oil pan rail that you can compare to the other one if it's an automatic. Manuals have one on the passenger side.

That does look strange. The font is definitely different. Since you cant see the bottom of the P chances are it been ground down and re-stamped.

I don't know if you have found the right answer yet but one way to tell if the numbers have been changed is to look at the background where the numbers are stamped. The original metal finish is pebbly and not smooth. The numbers are stamped in to the pebbly finish and there should not be any signs of filing or grinding the metal to change the numbers. Some dishonest people are doing this with rare Ram Air Carburetors and claiming that they are originals. Any alteration of the original background of the stamping is a clue it has been changed.

i'm not sure where you got this number from but the number that IDs the engine to the car is located on the front of the engine on the passenger side just below the head ,there should be 6 digits followed by a 2 or 3 letter code.pontiac stamped these numbers very lightly & are hard to see if the engine was painted.
