While driving, my battery light went on for a second, then went off. Why?

Your Battery light could come on anytime the engine rpm drops to low. This can be caused when a sudden load is added to your engine at low RPM : IE: AC / Smog pump / Power-steering / etc.. If happens often, a tune up would be advised. If not then not a big concern. Drive On

Battery light comes on when the battery falls below a certain voltage. It's indicating that the alternator is not charging the battery. It could have been a hickup but it wouldn't hurt to have the alternator tested. Yes low rpms would cause the light to come on but you're talking about less than 400 rpms. If you're gasoline engine is running at 400 rpms then it's an amazing feat.
