How should I handle objectionable communications?

Asked by pittjazzlibrarian Aug 29, 2018 at 05:32 PM about the 1972 Cadillac DeVille

Question type: General

I received a response from someone complaining about my posting of my
1972 Cadillac de Ville. His complaints were about my use of all caps to
emphasize certain conditions of offers I would accept and conditions of sale.
My ad received a 100% rating from your site. He did not make an offer. If he
contacts me again, continues to be negative and not making an offer, is there
a way to report him?

I got nailed for that too once a long time ago. I'm Old School and did not realize that "all caps" mean that I was yelling at my reader and he was really hot about it. No offense was intended and I apologized. For me, all caps make it easier to read. But I'll never do that again.

The problem here is not that I put the entire posting in upper case. I only put sertain statements, such as, "NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED!!" in upper case. Knowing that most of the places where I have the ad posted (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, Auto Trader Classic Cars, and here at Car Gurus) do not provide for changing fonts, italics, or boldface type, I formulated the ad once in Word and copy and pasted it into the text dialog on each site. As far as the statements I put in upper case, I had been advised to emphasize those statements by a professional classic automobile appraiser, to avoid problems with low-ball offers and attempts to defraud me of the automobile. Apparently the individual who complained about my ad wasn't a serious buyer anyway, he failed to make any sort of offer, just stating he was totally turned off by all caps and some of the statements I had put in the posting. His loss, his money is no good with me. Even if he eventually decides to make an offer, I'll refuse it out of hand. If that makes me a jerk, so be it. I also put in my posting that I would reply to every message. He recommended not replying to anyone who didn't make an offer I liked. To me, that's rude. Drew

All caps are really offensive to most people but you should ignore them.
