Do you have stock height on the vehicle and recommended size tires? If you have custom rims, do they have an off set placing the tires wider so it may rub on a fender? If you stock, it may be the wheel bearing gone bad. You have a heavy vehicle and depending on the driving history, this is a 95% correct diagnose. It is something in the steering geometry causing the grinding sound. Jack the vehicle up so the tire will turn freely. Please have the SUV blocked and engine off. Put it in neural if it is a 4 X 4. Turn the front wheel and listen. By turning, I mean to rotate it round and round. If it is a wheel bearing, you'll hear a grating sound. Do you have enough full power steering pump fluid?

Like said above, wheel bearings, or suspension geometry. Shocks, springs, or bad bushings, push or tie rods. Steering box? The car needs to be jacked up, wheels dangling and physically examine everything that moves. Push, pull twist, lift and jerk. Rock the wheels back and forth sideways. If you can't locate it, remove the tires and check the bearings. If this is done at very low speed, put the hood up and have someone drive it at idle speed. Walk beside the moving car when it is turning and see if you can locate the area of the knocking noise.

Sometime just a loose wheel well liner can cause rubbing sounds. Take a look to see what is going on.
