Is the expansion tank along side of the radiator necessary on a 1968 Cougar 302

the tank is plastic and I would like to know if it can be illiminated.

Thanks Tom, I was in need of the space. I wasn't sure about it's purpose. Thought maybe it was used as a capillary ( suction) action because the tube enters in the bottom Thanks again rbcougar
