How much ATF will 2001 Lumina 3100 need?

Asked by Charly921 Dec 19, 2012 at 06:18 AM about the 2001 Chevrolet Lumina

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a noise when engine under load.  Will stop 5-10 seconds after acceleration.  Will also appear going out of turns and sharp curves.  Added 1/2 quart ATF and noise eased but still present under heavy acceleration and left hand turns.  Is it safe to add additional 1/2 quart until car can be serviced friday?

Did you add ATF to your engine? Not good if you did. ATF has metal additives that will coat your O2 sensors. Limit your driving and change your oil if you did. Some GM V6's including the 3100 have short piston skirts and a little knocking is normal at start up. A knocking sound under acceleration could be worn rod bearings.

Dipstick virtually dry, and no I didn't put ATF in the oil, lol, I know the difference.
