1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Engine and Transmission Swapping?

Asked by kincaidhollow Apr 18, 2015 at 06:04 PM about the 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Question type: General

I have a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 4.3L 260 V8 Engine. I was wondering what kind/size of transmission did they install with the 260 engine?
Also if I change to a 350 engine what kind/size of transmission would I need and would I need to change anything else other then the transmission like Drive-Shaft, Differential, etc.?

A 350 engine will use a 350 or 400 trans. The trans cross member may have to be readjusted and the motor mounts will have be swapped out. The drive shaft might work, you'll have to do some measuring.

That answers a few of my questions but what about my differential there in the back. Will I have to have that swapped as well?

I dont intend on playing hard with it. Just trying to restore and bring the car back to life. Figured a new or reman. engine and transmission couldnt hurt just wasnt sure of everything else Id have to change as well if I was to throw in a different engine and transmission.

A TH350 with the BOP bolt pattern will fit without modifications, the TH200M was the original transmission installed with this engine

A TH400 would be the best choice for a transmission but if you are restoring the car and not hot rodding it why don't you keep it original? If you want more power the stock engine could be upgraded without a lot of trouble.
