Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need to re-tension the V-belt to the power steering pump of my '73 Buick. However, this seems to be much trickier than expected. Any hint how to get this done? Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter, this is done by loosening the pump mounting bolts. Place a crowbar or the tire iron for the bumper jack in between the pump and a convenient spot on the engine to give you leverage. Pull back on the crowbar to tighten the belt. While holding the crowbar in position, tighten the pump bolts to secure the pump in place. Remove the crowbar. On a used V belt you should have a half inch of deflection between the pump pulley and the other pulley the belt is on. Hope that helps! Jim
