I have never seen any V6 or V8 engines where you could pull the piston out from the bottom. Even if you could the tool to compress the rings and install the piston will only work from the top with the head off. It needs a flat surface to rest on. Besides, if it broke a rod then there is a chance that it bent a valve or may have damaged the head or even the cylinder wall. You should look everything over before going to far.
well the rod bearing was spun when i got it and i wobbled out the rod so its still in one piece. i was just thinking i could pull the piston down till i can get to the wrist pin, but leave the piston in the cylinder.
Well I won't say it's impossible but on most GM cars the wrist pin is pressed into the piston. If this is the case then you will not be able to get it out while in the car. If the pin is held in with retaining rings then maybe, but I would bet that the piston won't come down far enough. Good luck.
well thanks for the help, i guess i just take the top end apart.

Yes, I agree with all of this. My engine broke a rod at 64,000 miles in 1997. I had the engine rebuilt in 1998 and finally rebuilt the car a few years ago. Every nut turned. I might have some parts around, as I am going to be posting some body, chrome and other parts for sale on E Bay and maybe a few message boards where allowed. Let me know if you are looking for anything. I will check my inventory. Is that '84 the same G body as mine? The 2 and 4 door are the same G.
