Mazda Miata dead battery

Asked by GuruDWKTQ8 May 18, 2024 at 09:49 AM about the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I let my Miata sit too long and the fobs are fine
but I believe the batteries dead. I was able to
insert the key to get into the car, but the turning
implement to turn the car on is locked so I
cannot turn it on to give it a rolling jumpstart.

You can try one of those jump boxes that run power via the power ports but if the main battery is that far gone I doubt it will work, you probably going to have to replace the main battery. Now it is high likely that the security system will go full active when the new battery is installed so make sure you read the manual on how to put it in standby when main power is turned on.

If the vehicle sat long enough to completely kill the battery, the battery needs to be replaced. Especially if it's more than a couple years old. However, if you have a battery charger with a manual setting you may be able to bring the battery back to life. Set the charger on manual at the lowest amperage setting for a few hours. If the battery takes that charge then you can switch the charger to automatic and continue charging the battery. Jim
