How much to replace the timing belt on a 97 caviler?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I am looking at getting a car and this one is pretty cheap but it needs a timing belt. I have no clue
what that is or what it does but I would like to know. Thanks so much!

The Cavalier engine has a timing chain.
These cars suck in general. If the motor doesnt crap out the trans or electrical will. Replacing the timing chain is a costly job that cost more than I would pay for a cavalier that runs.

I've replace lots if timing chains on Cavalier models equipped with the 2.2L engine. Here is a list of parts you will need using Advance Auto part numbers and prices in Yanceyville, NC area. __Timing Chain Set- 76103 $59 __Timing Cover Gasket Set - TCS45793 - $12 __Oil Pan Gasket Set - OS34300C - $15 __Oil Filter (Fram) - PH3387A - $4 __Castrol GTX 5W-30 Conventional Motor Oil (4 Quarts) -06144 -$23 Total Parts $113 plus your sale tax. If you are having someone to do it for you, labor might range from $40- $120 per hour depending on who you hire. I allow 4 hours at $65/hr to replace the timing chain.
If the timing chain busts you will need to probably get a used engine. If you have no compression, it is probably the timing chain broke or jumped and if it jumped, it could of bent the valves. so to redo the timing chain, it can get a lot more costly than having a well known shop doing the motor. I am going through the same thing right now.
Does it really cost $850 for a timing chain for parts and labor
