What does a flashing service engine light mean?

The car lurches as if the fuel filter is stopped up and the service engine light is flashing.

Flashing SES light indicates a serious malfunction that could be causing catalytic convertor or engine damage. Have the codes read and the problem fixed ASAP.

Could be a bad fuel pump. I know on my SVT when my pump was giving me issues, I was getting a fuel pressure code on OBDII. Could be the same deal for you.
