license plate light only comes on when trunk release button is pressed but trunk does not open, why?

Sounds like a wire is shorted or crossed/misinstalled back there, causing the trunk release button to provide power to the license plate light. Take a look to see if a previous owner fiddled with wiring or if there are bare or frayed wires present in the trunk area.
