does the 3.4 L V6 DOHC engine need the timing chain replaced at 80,000 miles?

As you may know, timing chains stretch over time, and a stretched chain can cause minor problems, including noise (usually rattling near the front of the engine), poor fuel economy, and rough idling. If a timing chain breaks, it will cause much more serious problems, bringing the engine to an immediate halt and possibly destroying it. To keep your daughter safe, you'll want to make sure the timing chain in that car has been or will soon be replaced. You may be okay though, since many manufacturers actually recommend at least inspecting the timing belt at 60,000 miles, not 80,000. The owner of the car or a good mechanic should be able to tell you whether the timing chain in that car has already been replaced. Best of luck!

You use the term timing belt and timing chain the same however these are NOT the same please make sure you are referencing correctly for people who do not know the difference

The 3.4L engine has a Timing Belt and Recommended replacement is at 60,000 miles,under Normal driving conditions and the 3.1L engine has a Timing Chain and should last the life of the engine,just keep the oil changed regularly! I see this is an old post,but may help others in the future....

The LQ-1, 3.4 DOHC has both a timing belt setup that connects the 4 camshafts to a balance shaft or "Dummy Cam" and also a timing chain that connects the crank shaft to the balance shaft. Be sure that the correct parts are being quoted and replaced.
