Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 2005 Ford Five Hundred, the air will not cool when just idling, but if your driving it cools just fine. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

That Used To happen to a truck i had, a 1999 GMC Sierra. Later on the truck would not cool anymore so what was wrong with it was a leak. pretty sure you have a leak on one of the lines or in the a/c compressor.

I had the same problem. In fact, one side would blow air that gradually lost the cool when idling at a stop (it will blow warm air when outside temperature was in the high 80s or higher when the engine was idling) even on recirculation. On recirculation, I would get a distinct smell building up inside the car. The Ford dealer said that there was a leak on that side of the a/c unit. He said that when idling, the engine revs are low and less power goes to the a/c unit. When driving, the revs are higher and the cooling overcomes the effect of the hot air getting in through the leak. I can't remember what he said about where the leak was, but I think he said something about bags or something on each side and one side was letting in air from the engine compartment. He said that I could test that was the case by idling in neutral and when the accelerator was pressed to increase the revs, the a/c air should gradually get cooler, if that was the reason. That is exactly what happened. They wanted to change the unit at over a $1000, but I am trying to see whether it can be repaired rather than replacing the a/c unit.

Very simple fix. Your Freon is low in the system,as long as there's no leaks? But if there was a leak you would have lost it all bye now trust me !go to auto zone, buy one large can of Freon only no Freon and oil just Freon! It will take you 5 minutes, hold the can upright and as it goes in the system agitate can emback and forth slowly until its empty &dont forget after you screw the can in and only after turn on the a/c system on high until the can is empty stay cool
