We had a 1979 FORD granada what would rip the wheel out of your hand, and squack like a chicken until it warmed up. As I recall this was a recall item, but the age of your truck may invalidate any recalls. Of course you checked the belts, and the fluid level, no? Replace the unit if all is right. Perhaps the mileage makes it OK?
I am stumped! Could it be a steering box issue? I don't think so... Has your pump cavitated?
I'm sure you checked for fluid. RockAuto.com has replacement parts and rebuild kits.
