Wiring harness compatibility

You are going to have to swap over engine computer, wire harness, sensors/sending units, probably exhaust/cats/O2 sensors, and check compatibility between new engine and transmission. 1996 was the big year for switching over to OBD2, so all your old sensors and modules aren't going to be compatible. The newer truck might have heated O2 sensors where the older truck didn't. You might also want to check is newer short block can swap in place of the older one, then xfer over the intake, throttle body, and linkage. Make sure whatever kicks down the tranny is the same, sorry I don't have detailed info I'm just going off top of head.

Thanks for your response. I understand that all of those other things have to be swapped over, but my question is: when i plug in the wiring harness on the outside into the inside one, will that make it work? Are they compatible? The two sides?

As KenF said above, no. You cannot just plug it in and expect it to work. The newer engine will not run properly on the old 1992 computer.

As far as engine wire harness mating to the body or instrument cluster harness, you would have to compare them to know for sure, but it's doubtful. They make year by year changes to harnesses and you are looking at a 6 year difference in trucks. If even one pin is different they won't work. You also have the big change to OBD2 in 1996 that would mean a major difference in harnesses from that point forward. They do make a jumper harness for converting between OBD1 and OBD2, you would be better off looking on a Chevy truck forum for advice on this swap.
