My car was services only 2 months ago, and I drove it to the Gold Coast one week ago from Melbourne, now the oil light has come on! The oil level seems ok, but I've never checked it by myself before?

How do you know the oil level is OK if you have never checked it? Park the car on a level surface and let it sit for at least 5 minutes before checking the oil level. Use a rag to clean the dipstick and then re-insert it. Pull it out and if the level is between the high and low marks then the level is OK. There may be other reasons why the oil light came on - worn engine, bad oil pressure sender, collapsed oil filter or worn oil pump.
I did check the oil today but it's the 1st time I've done it. (Hubby usually does this stuff but he is not here) The ground is level and the car has'nt been used today, I cleaned the dip stick put it back in and pulled it out, the level was about 1cm above the 2 holes in the stick. The light came on yesterday when I got home.
The upper hole is the high mark and the lower hole the low mark and the level should be between the two. Your car may be overfilled a bit but that would not make the oil light come on. If you overfill a lot the oil can foam up and cause damage though. I would not drive the car until the problem is solved as driving it with low oil pressure could mean ruining the engine. Was the engine making any unusual noises?
That is good at least! Something just occurred to me. Is it the change oil light or the low oil pressure light? If it is the change oil light then take it by the shop that did the oil change and have them re-set the light.
It says " service engine oil" and there is a picture of an oil can. Problem with taking it back to where it was serviced is that I'm 18hrs drive away!
Full of Regrets is on the right track. Sound like they did not reset the oil light. You can go to any oil change place and have it done, it just takes a minute to do. You need a scanner to do this.
Thanks so much Full of Regrets and Rowefast, really appreciate your help!
Maybe a local shop will be nice and do it for you but it is nothing to worry about.
Hey guys, wouldn't it have a picture of a car with a spanner if this was the problem?
