how do you remove the glove box lock mechanism from a 1978 elcamino

You need the key and a straightend out paper clip or pin to do this properly. Step 1. locate the small access hole for the release pin. (Red arrow) Note, if you do not have an access hole, take a small drill bit and make a hole in the aproximate location.

Step 2. Press pin down with pin or paper clip while pulling on the knob, it will come out a little, but not all the way.

Step 3. Intsert key fully into the lock mechanism.

Step 4. Hold the key into the knob and pull, it should slide out.

Step 5. Installing the knob. Press the first pin down all the way and hold it. ( Red arrow)

Step 6. Insert key fully into the lock mechanism. the key will level all the pins including the first.

Step 7. With the latch mechanism bolted to the door, insert the lock and mechanism all the way. It is important to make sure the knob and lock is bottomed out.

Step 8. While holding the knob in place, pull out and remove key fully. When you do, the first pin will pop up into place and hold the knob and lock into place. Its a little tricky, but hopefully this step by step helps you out. Good Luck!
