Is the R35 still a "skyline"?

Asked by Lanz33 Dec 20, 2015 at 08:57 PM about the Nissan GT-R

Question type: General

I know that the r35 isnt a skyline anymore cause
they dropped the badged and I know it is still part
of the family tree of gtr's r32-33-34-35 but Im in a
argument in facebook that they are insisting that
the r35 is still a skyline. I was just talking about the
badge at the back of the car. The letters "S K Y L I
N E" the question is it still a skyline?

Shamion,. So are you basically saying because it's badged as a GT-R and does not say Skyline on it, that it means that it's not a type of Skyline? You must be the type that likes to argue about insignificant things! In my opinion Any Enthusiast of Japanese cars knows that a GT-R is a Skyline at it's heart, even though it may not say Skyline on it. But that is just my opinion and we are all entitled to our own opinions even you mate! Cheers!

The people that think the R35 is a skyline need to learn why the predecessors were called skyline in the first place. The R35 does not use the same chassis and is a totally different build. The R34, R33, R32 etc were called skylines because they all used the same chassis as the predecessors.

So a R35 GTR cannot be a Skyline, but a Skyline can be a GTR? Is that right?? Huh? HUH?

It has nothing to do with the chassis of the car etc, you know the real reason it's not a skyline ? The same reason why in Japan a g35 is a skyline. Because the Nissan engineers who designed the car the manufacture who owns the rights to the name Skyline decided it's not. It doesn't really matter what you want to believe or not Nissan decided it's not one decided to name the r35 just Gt-r so that's all it is. This chassis argument is invalid, because 1969 Camaro has a different chassis than a 2019. The argument that "my opinion is it is a Skyline" is also invalid you can all have opinions it doesn't mean it matters you don't own Nissan or the rights to the name plate skyline so what you believe and don't believe at that point does not matter

Skyline is a model designated my the manufacturer, in this case Nissan (Prince also had a Skyline until they were bought by Nissan), manufacturers can do what they please with a model name. In this case splitting the Skiline name and the GTR production edition of the Skyline. This allowed them to maximize profit by selling 2x models and focus on specific markets instead of trying to hit two markets in one (VIP sports car and enthusiast racers). BUT legally speaking you can not sell the same model on separate chassis withing the same model year. The G35/CV35/V35 Skyline is a FM (front midship) platform and the GTR is a PM platform (premium midship). Both very similar but still different. Business wise this was very smart especially in North America where Nissan makes a bigger premium selling under the Inifiniti brand. Please remember as well the politics involved. Nissan was broker than broke in 2002 and merged with Renault to infuse some $ Carlos Ghosen "Mr Fixit" was named CEO. He fixed their money issue by universalizing production. This meant every can had the same engine (GTR and Sentras excluded) being the VQ35de. Until that point every model had a different engine. So without the change in Skyline and splitting the GTR you would not have either. Keep that in mind. So from this we can see that if i buy a 2004 Skyline i will end up with a RHD G35 with Nissan badges. Not an R35 GTR. Nissan chose the "R" designation to encourage purists to spend the $ on the GTR because it has an R in its chassis code and therefore must be a Skyline....its not. Its better. Its a GTR. The V35/is the true Skyline and even today can be purchased in Japan but you will end up with a Q series RHD infiniti with Nissan badges. Or the other way around depending on how u look at it. Skylines do not need an RB to be a Skyline there are plenty before and after the RB engine series. The Skyline does not need to be AWD. There are actually more RWD skylines than AWD but AWD is better unless drift car. The R34 chassis and the V35 are surprisingly similar once body panels are removed. Shockingly similar actually. RB engines are as reliable as the VQ, they both throw rods like baseballs under high boost, and ON PAPER have very similar power figures. But as anyone who loves GTRs will know a gentleman's agreement was in place to understate the power figures on paper actual HP was in the 320hp range not 280. Here is my question for you purists who refuse to see the G35 as a Skyline: Can a Skyline still be awesome if its Automatic? My opinion is a big He** NO (GTR only comes in AT)....my $0.02

FIRST OFF: There are a few vehicles such as Porsche/BMW/McLaren that have the GTR badging as well as other car manufactures. Nissan however, decided to officially make a GT-R brand/line of cars (R35) that started in 2007. SECOND: The R35 is a completely new platform not derived from the early Skyline vehicles and in no description has any ties to the Skyline family other than by hype and similarities to the R34 in appearance, but it is not a Skyline. The demand for a "Skyline Styled" vehicle was so high in the United States, Nissan had to respond so they created the R35 for those that desperately want to think they are driving a Skyline. It doesn't matter how many magazine covers show the R35 vs R34 and ect. it's just a marketing plan that worked, the cars are selling and you can get a Nismo version for over 200K! THIRD: While the United States has been playing catch-up with the rest of the world that have been driving Skyline vehicles since the early '90s. Japan never stopped producing the Skyline. The V35 was the first Skyline made for export to the United States. It was sold under the company's luxury brand, Infiniti as the G35 in 2003. People need to accept this and get over it. The USDM Skyline cars started with the Infiniti G35 and continue under that car's progression currently the Q50 (sedan) and the Q60(coupe). LASTLY: Skyline production never stopped and Skylines have always been offered with a manual transmission option and a two-door and 4 door sedan option since 1957. That is not the case with the R35, it's a completely new platform separate from Nissan's Skyline history and only comes as an automatic with a manual mode which became standard in most cars when the R35 debut.
