Try Standard Motors part number RU100 (or RU100T) voltage reducer

Thank you. I just purchased the instrument panel voltage regulator and let you know what happens. Where does the voltage reducer go?
The voltage reducer would go inline with the feed wire for the guage, it limits 12 volts down to 6 volts.

ah ok so it goes in series. Makes sense. I'm going to try the instrument panel voltage regulator and keep you posted
Please do! If all else fails there may be a fault in the gauge itself which may be repairable by an auto electric wizard

I did notice that the voltage regulator does take the volts from 12 to 6. So maybe the voltage reducer won't be needed. I should be picking up the regulator tonight.
I have the same problem. I changed the sending unit, the small voltage regulator, and the gas gauge, also I put a new ground wire on the tank and still the gauge goes past full when the key is turned on. now what do I do?

I ended up buying an autometer after market fuel gauge. It appears to solve the problem. I mounted mine under that dash basically below the ashtray. Now the new sending unit I purchased was also bad so ecklers sent me another one. did you check your sending unit when it was out of the tank?

If you happen to go with an after market gauge you buypass all the IVR and wire directly from the ketswitch and ground and directly to the sending unit from the gauge.
