1995 gmc sub k1500 350 v8 told to use #1 on left front and told to use #1 on rite front of eng to time eng wich one is correct ?

1995 suburban gmc 350 v8 told to use # 1 on left front of eng..then told to use #1 on rite side of engine for top dead center initial timing ....which one is correct ..can chevy be done either way?...or is some one confusing me with ford..cant remember ever using left side as #1..thanks u guys are great..mt pockets..
