engine won't turn over

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I purchased a 1975 fiat 124, the starter turns over, but the motor does not, if I put it n gear and let out the clutch, the starter will move the car, so the starter is turning over the flywheel, but not the motor. any idea?

Sounds like flywheel came loose from engine. Does it make any grinding noises or rattles while turning it over?
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE ENGINE IS NOT TURNING OVER?
1, remove the spark plugs , turn the engine by hand an listen for air escaping from the spark plug holes. 2, if possible shine a torch down the spark plug holes to see if you can view the pistons moving. 3, Carry out a compression test this will give you your answer. 4, If your crankshaft pulley is not turning but your pistons are moving I would suspect a sheared woodruff key, if the pistons are not moving then i would suspect a sheared crankshaft. Best of luck.
yes it may be the flywheel
