Advice needed: Rear room on 328i vs 528i for a growing famiy

Asked by bmw_newbie Oct 07, 2007 at 12:21 PM about the BMW 3 Series

Question type: General

Hope this is not too mundane a question. If so, advance apologies. I am downsizing from 2001 Acura MDX SUV and have narrowed down the choices to a 328 and 528.  But we need some advice/opinions from folks who may have gone through some thing similar recently..

Here is the situation.  Wife & I(a family of 4, including 2 boys 10 & 6 years) have driven both the 328i and the 528i and surprise, surprise, like them both. Felt that the 328 drives a bit tighter, gets good mileage whereas 528 is more luxurious and roomy for a $10K premium. Although the 328's rear seat appears to be comfortable enough for the kids right now, we are wondering if the room will become a big concern soon enough that we should consider only a 5 series. I would like to think that some in the forum may have gone through this situation before.

What do you advice? I hope the question is not too vague. Your opinions will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I am in that exact situation; however, towards the end of it. If you a re concerned about a growing family… STOP and get the 5 series. Do not even bother with the lame excuse of back seats the 3 series has to offer. The 3 is an absolute thrill to drive but not comfortable. I am currently upgrading from the new 328 model to a 5. Don’t know what 5 but definitely a five. The legroom is not much more, but if you get the 3 you will kick your self for 36 payments. Furthermore, if you don’t kick yourself, your kids in the back seat will, every time they ride! Hope this helps.

im think touring or x5 with 3rd row seating.3 series is too small for driving peolpe around all the time.or wave goodby to the wife and kids and get a 650.

I have had 5 BMW's the current one is a 5 series. While I enjoy the ride the interior size is disappointing. I am 6 foot 4 250 pounds. My wife is 5 foot 120. When my older son is home,6'5" with and we are in the front our wives ,both 5 foot, they are cramped in the back. We are going back to a 3 series for us and purchased a 7 passenger Land Rover for when the kids come home.
