Fix a price you are willing to pay. If dealer won't meet it walk away.

If it's a used car you should be able to get him down at least 15%.

Keep it real simple just tell the salesman that the amount you offered is all you have to spend on a car right now.
The link below is to an article that shows do-it-yourselfers get through the entire process of buying a car (from choosing, test driving, negotiating, and navigating the items after the sale). The short answer is to get competing quote from various dealers if buying a new car to make them bid for your business, since the product is the same everywhere. If buying used, a very different process, since there's no way to compare. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, as I've been negotiating new vehicles for almost 19 years and have done so over 7500 times. 240-403-1069 http://www.fromcartofinish.com/The_best_way_to_buy_a_new_vehicle Mike www.fromcartofinish.com
If you know what car you want follow the simple steps. Search the car in detail including the spec you want. Check online for cars for sale and see what price they are going for. This will help you to have an idea how much the market place is going at that time. DONT believe anything the sames person is telling you. Play a game with them by visiting several dealers and see who offers the best discount. If you are going to trade in your old car do not mention until you have a good discount. If you are going to get the car on finance there is more discount to have. Once you have visited one dealer it gets easier and fun. Good luck
