Strange execessive smoke

My Sharan 2003 started giving whitish smoke coming from a small pipe which is opened just infront of left passenger side back tyre. There is no extra noise the way a leaking exaust would give. I left it with a local Mechanic today .He said he has never seen any thing like this before. Any such experience or any suggestion what might be the cause?

sounds like rear incab heater has packed up not lighting up
