Sales tax from private seller?

Question type: Shopping & Pricing
I thought only private sellers allowed on this site. I researched online that no
sales tax is levied if auto sold by private seller. So why is he insisting on
charging 8.6% (Phoenix). Is this a scam?

Private sellers AND dealers are welcomed to sell their vehicles here. But you are correct, you don't pay sales tax to a private seller OR if you're buying outside of your home State. In those cases you pay sales tax when you clear the title and register the vehicle. If this is a private sale or a long distance purchase and the seller wants sales tax, walk away. Either they're trying to scam you or they don't know what they're doing! Hope that helps! Jim
