How good is a 2speed powerglide auto trans?

yes, just dont put a big strain on it.
By strain you mean... large loads in bed & taking off fast?
pulling heavy loads, takeing off fast is ok,do the burn outs.
When new, those transmissions were a piece of crap, but that's what was offered at the time. If you want to keep it original, keep it, and have it reworked. I'd go after market like Tremac or something that will give you power for loads and good mileage for road driving and reliability. the bands wore out constantly when used or slightly abused on the 2 speed slush box.

If the 305 is running decent and the Trans shifts ok and your just going to be cruzin... keep the oil and filter changed in the 305, new points, condenser, Plugs & wires...flush the block and radiator etc. IF you wish to you can switch distributor out to later model electronic and eliminate those points... (GOOD MOVE)...Change the filter, and modulator valve and fluid in that Trans and it should serve you well for just cruzin and haulin light loads or pulling small trailers....Alot of people didn't like them, but they were decent and held up well if you maintained them... same with the 305... SAVE THE MONEY,...DO THE MAINTENANCE...DRIVE IT... ENJOY IT
