I'm considering buying a '98 BMW 528i. Is this a good or bad idea?

178k miles. Asking $2300. Says no transmission or engine problems, runs great. I have not seen in person yet. What are important questions to ask. I can't afford immediate problems and repairs.

"...I can't afford immediate problems and repairs." Tom's right: this is the LAST car you should be looking at. High-mileage European cars are a money pit just waiting to happen. Their basics (engine/ transmission, etc...) may last a lifetime, but it's all the other stuff (electrical, brakes, HVAC) that will kill any budget. We have a saying in the car business: there's nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes or BMW.
