ok...i have a 97 Sebring convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a reoccurring problem and i have replaced the battery and the
alternator twice...which at the time seemed to rectify the problem...not so
because it is back! Im driving down the road say 40 mph (it really doesnt
matter the speed) and all the sudden the car jolts yu forward full thrust and
like stops then keeps going but gasping or chugging...throw it into neutral
and it sounds fine...revs up...guages r flatlined,,,thats how i know its not
going to keep running once i shift back into drive. As long as I have it in
neutral i can keep reving the engine and its running fine....sometimes the
guages will work for a second or two...you can hear the bells in the
background that the car makes when it dies...those 3 or 4 bells your car
gives you to tell u or remind u of something...and guages are flatlined...yet
motor is running fine....put it into drive and it will chug, gasp, knock . You
cannot start it again after this because it will not have enough power to do
so.  Have disconnected fuse 5 from the dash fuse box so that there is
nothing that can be running the battery down while the car is parked and off.
I have jumped the car and sometimes it will go....like nothing is
wrong...sometimes it will start but not really go....I have taken the battery out
and charged it...put it back in (im not sure if u all r aware but it is located
behind the front drivers side tire!!) so its not just a drop in situation....anyway,
after it was charged i hooked it back up..the car started right up....i drove it
approximately 7 -10 miles and i was probably going 17 mph maybe and it
joltrd and chugged....was on an incline and traffic dstopped for electrical pole
and wire work...being redirected ,,slow and stop flaggers....the car started
smoking...alot from under yhe hood, drivers side...if i put it in drive it would
start to roll bkwrds and chug and sputter....in nuetral it would run but noy on
that incline for long as something was very  hot??/  idk wth is wrong with my
car!!!

Follow the smoke, no joke you have a bad connection causing your problem, Do this turn on every thing in the car like heater blower, lights wipers ect. But don't start the engine. Give it a minute or Two then CAREFULLY feel the wires under the hood one or more will be warm or hot follow the heat to the bad connection the wiring will get hotter the closer you get, remember I said careful these wires can be red hot.
