Is the vw GTI difficult & expensive to maintain?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Would I have to have a certified vw tech work on my car just to do maintenance work on it? I was told that everything is so tight under the hood that they are difficult to work on...Also oil change has to be European synthetic and that runs about 90. Cheapest tires that would be under there regulations would cost 199 each..  I owned a Honda and I didn't have these cost issues, am I getting in over my head?

VW cost more to maintain than a Honda. Little things crop up over time. But any good shop can perform maintenance on it. Find a shop that specializes in Imports. You can also do your own oil changes for half that cost. What year GTI? Tires can be had for $150 depending on what brand.
