Hyundai Elantra 2003 runs rough like no fuel, Tach quits working windows won't go up, what could it be?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Two weeks ago my car died pulling into a parking lot. It sat for 2 hours and
then it started but I went to an auto parts store and they said battery.
Worked great until today. I first noticed that my windows wouldn't go up or
down. I drove 3 miles and suddenly noticed it was running rough like no
fuel but when I looked down my tach quit working. It got worse so I pulled
into a parking lot and it died and I couldn't even get it to turn over. It also
locked my car down with everything in it! Help! I have no idea where to
have this repaired if it is electrical!

Sounds like the alternator has stopped charging have alternator tested should be charging at 14 volts.
We jumped it and it started and ran for 5 minutes and it started to run rough again. It acts electrical but I have no idea what. I just don't want a repair person to screw me over! The engine light does not come on! So no codes!
Auto_Centric answered 8 years ago
Stored codes even if the engine light is NOT on. Scan for codes.

And also still have the alternator tested.
Thanks guys but they said without the engine light being on they couldn't scan for codes! I will have the alternator checked as well...if I can find tools to take it off... I gave mine to the kids!
Do either of you think it could be the crankshaft sensor?

Do not know where you went to get the codes scanned but if they told you they cannot scan with out the check engine light being on they do not no want they are doing. Where did you take your vehicle to have the codes scanned ?
I didn't I went and asked them because I have to tow it there. Both O'reilly's and Autozone
firebird338 answered 8 years ago
Will autozone let you rent the scan tool ? They usually just ask for a deposit until you return the tool and they will give you back your deposit.
Ok I rented a scan tool and it said zero codes showing. I tested the battery after the test and it said 11.34 volts. I styarted it and drove 2 blocks to my apt. This would indicate my alternator, correct??
Can putting a belt on too tight burn out an alternator?
firebird338 answered 8 years ago
The alternator test you tested it with the vehicle running correct ? And yes you can over tighten belt and cause the bearing to burn out but isn't that belt a serpentine belt that has a tensioner to automatically tighten belt to correct tension ?
I haven't had the alternator tested yet. No this car does not have an automatic tensioner. I had all 3 belts replaced a month ago. And a week ago I replaced the battery.

Have alternator tested should be charging at 14 volts.
I had the alternator tested and that was the problem. New alternator and on the road again. Thank you for the advice!
