I am not professional mechanic but I recall the selling point of this car wS that the hybrid is recharged every time pressure is applied to brakes, so stop and go traffic would be ideal for recharging and therefore in a place like Los Angeles that was a selling point to me. I could be wrong, I may have been given false information but that’s what I believed.

If I recall correctly, there is a recall on the brake switch. The car won't start without the brakes being pushed. That switch tells the computers in the car that it is OK to start. Check your VIN number against the NTSB recall database at their website. Hopefully the fix is that easy. Good luck!
