Transmission fluid pan leak-1996 Mazda DLX Protege. Garage mech. told me that if I change fluid to repair and put new fluid in it cold destroy the vehicle. Sound accurate to anyone?

no, it's old school knowledge from when people take a car and drive 150,000 on original trans fluid the new fluid would clear out passages blocked by crusty old build-up.

Over the life of a car, the transmission parts will wear, leaving metal particles in the fluid. If the fluid has never been changed, it is likely that doing so will cause harder shifts, as those metal particles will now be gone. If you go through with the repair, I would recommend only replacing the fluid lost, and not doing a transmission flush.
