I was on my way home from LA I got half ways their and
then my car didn't want to go to 4th gear it's a 2003 vw
golf automatic

Did you check your ATF? Automatic Transmission Fluid may be old or below proper level. Can cause tranny to act up or function improperly/ Shift rough or not shif at all. If fluid has more than 50k on it, you may want to start there.
