2000 Grand Marquis Starter Keeps Failing

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am so aggravated! I was driving down the
road and all the sudden I hear this loud
grinding noise. It was a mix between
grinding and a loud squealing. Identical to
when you start your car and forget you
started and start it again. It only last for a
second and then would stop. Then it would
do it again there was no rhyme or reason
or time framing when it would happen. Did
this for a couple days before anything
happened. I finally shut the engine off one
day because the noise was getting worse
and more frequent. After that it wouldn't
start. I then bought a brand new starter, I
paid more for a good one. Replaced the
starter on it, it was fine. Fired right up! Ran
for a few days then it did it again! Started
making the same exact noise and now the
car won't start again. It's like the ignition is
not shutting off because it could even kill
the battery sometimes. The main problem
is this noise is causing the starter or
something to keep breaking. Oh please if
anybody can help me I would so greatly
appreciate it. I'm beyond aggravated I have
twins and I need my car. Lol! Thank you

Someone else said flexplate? Does anyone think that sounds like a possibility? I appreciate y'all taking the time to answer.

Yes, that's the same thing as F_O_R is talking about. The flex plate has a gear around the edge of it that the starter engages to crank the engine when you turn the ignition key. If it's damaged the starter may not be releasing when the engine starts. Hope that helps! Jim

All my research is coming back the same. One more thing. Do you replace the gear ring or the flexplate. Is this one unit? I don't know how to fix cars or what the parts look like but I know basics. Obviously I'm a woman and I just want all my t's crossed and I's dotted before I get it fixed. I can't afford bs if you know what I mean.

You're welcome. Glad to help! Yes, the flexplate has the ring gear attached to it. So it's all one part. Hope that helps! Jim

The transmission, driveshaft, maybe exhaust and other parts will have to be removed to access the flex plate. I would have a mechanic diagnose the issue before you spent the time and money going through all the work and you still have the problem.
