Could the check engine light and white smoke be due to recent repairs

Asked by Guru9H4FF7 Oct 26, 2021 at 12:24 PM about the Hyundai Santa Fe XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On 10/19/21 my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe had 2
FUEL LINES REPAIRS and Rear Brake job
done. I picked up my vehicle Wednesday
10/20/21 and drove home about 29 miles via
expressway and everything was fine. I got in
my vehicle again Sunday 10/24/21 and drove
5 miles to Church and it was fine. On my way
home from Church the check engine light
came on. The next day Monday evening
10/25/21 when driving the vehicle out of the
garage a lot of white smoke was coming from
underneath the hood. Could the check engine
light and white smoke be due to the recent
repairs I had done to my Hyundai Santa Fe.
My vehicle has 181,000 miles. I purchased
this vehicle in 2002 and have maintained it
well ever since.

Look for any obvious leaks once it cools down , maybe the brake reservoir had a loose cap , I'd think if anything smoked it would be be after the initial highway miles . At least it's not fuel , you'd smell that . Something else could have gone wrong by pure coincidence .

It probably is, indirectly, related to the recent repairs. On an older model when repairs are made and other things have to be moved to get to the components being worked on things can happen. Old hoses are stiff and brittle. They can start leaking after being disturbed. Same with old wiring that hasn't been touched since the vehicle was built. That kind of wispy grey smoke looks like something oil based is burning. I'd have it towed back to the shop for a second look. Or use a mobile mechanic, whichever is better for you. I wouldn't drive it until you find out what's going on. The last thing you want is a fire!! Hope that helps! Jim
