What year? If it has fuel injection it could be the fuel pump inside the fuel tank, running it out of fuel overheats the fuel pump cause it uses the fuel as coolant. Fords also have been known to have problems with the inertia switch wiring right at the inertia switch. Totally plugged fuel filter, fuel pump relay failure.

If you have an electric fuel pump in the gas tank running it out of gas will burn out the pump pretty quickly. The gasoline flowing through the pump cools and lubricates the fuel pump. Running it dry will cause the pump to overheat and burn out. Jim
