What does the letter designation mean

From the web....."Automakers use a variety of model designations to denote plain or fancy versions, and there's no rhyme or reason behind the letters and numbers. One company's S model, for example, may be a direct rival for another's SE, LE or LX model. They're just another way of saying Good, Better, Best."
Thanks what do they actually mean so I know what I'm buying
If you are looking at new, go to the Nissan website and look what is available for each designation. The "S" will be the base package.
I purchased a Altima claiming a great deal but only one car he would sell at that price. NO lettering on rear so reading this it is a base mode. Not so fast, car has smart key (can start the car from inside), electric adjustable front seat, chrome interior and exterior, 2 device inputs in rear, rear camera, came with complete floor custom mats, and cruise control . So what is it?
