I had an older vehicle that had a special diode module on the distributor, it would do the same thing. My Dad always showed me, "Spark, Fuel, & Air". I would check the spark by sticking a screwdriver in the plug socket and arc it to the engine block while turning over the engine. No spark, would have something to do with your coil, or whatever module you have for spark to your plugs.
totally dead?? as in no starter function? if so the ignition module on top of the steering wheel column could be failing. mine did around this car's age.
