Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Need next step trouble shooting advice. After Alternator replacement the car will not start, will not shift out of park. Key in on position gives normal dash board indicator lights. OBD2 hand held tester will not power up when plugged in.No power to radio, windows, heat, a/c. Battery is good, no blown fuses. Car will start when Starter relay is bypassed.

Sounds like a bad ECM , if you didn't use a memory saver then it may only need to be re- flashed ,, check all fusible links and mega fuses , What were the circumstances with the alternator , crossed wires ? sparks flying ? Anything like that ? If things were normal before you did the work then I'd say you did something wrong .

Sounds like the security system is active. Shut down procedures are in the owners manual for your make and model.

I agree it’s probably something to do with security system/ anti theft but have you tried swapping relays to make sure your starter relay isn’t bad also maybe check all your grounds to make sure they’re all clean and getting good contact. Yesterday I drove my truck and turned it off for about 3 minutes and got back in and it wouldn’t do anything no lights nothing and popped the hood and my ground cable clamp at the battery had broke I rigged it to get contact and it started right up so a ground not getting good enough contact can cause problems good luck

Suggestion Suggestion....ck the 100+ amp ALT. FUSE. It should be located in Underhood fuse box....or...might be in a seperate box at the Pos. Battery Cable.. Get back to us with results.

To all, While I had checked for pwr at each critical point with a meter with good results after inspecting fuses multiple times the only inspection of the Alternator/Bank Fuse (120amp) I was able to accomplish was visual through the window while installed. It was clear and appeared to be intact. No haze, burning or discoloration. I had not removed it because the indication was that I had appropriate voltage at the regulator. pulled the fuse box and removed the fuse. While bolted in place it was making contact (barely) once remove there was a clear break. Dealer only part, Toyota Guys were equally perplexed. Problem solved back on the road. Thank all of you for your help. OBD2 indicates no codes. It did not record the fault or was cleared while repair was being made and battery was out.

WOW Toyotas don’t usually have master fuse problems, but you found it. Thanks for letting us know.
