1989 Corolla intermittent fuel starvation
I have a 1989 Corolla All-Track (1.6L 1587 CC L4AFE DOHC), runs good
for weeks/months then one day it has a fuel starvation issue. I can usually
keep it running if I pump the gas peddle and keep the idle high at a traffic
light. If it dies I have to keep the gas peddle to the floor then pump it to get
it started again. I've so far been able to baby it home. The next day it starts
right up and runs fine for weeks again. Can this be diagnosed if it is so
intermittent? Any ideas on what could cause such erratic behavior?
Have you replaced your fuel filter? I would start there and check the old one to see if it is full of dirt or rust. If that does not do it there may be debris in your fuel tank or the fuel pump could be giving out.
That is good advice, I agree, start with FoR's suggestion. There is a mesh sock in the tank attached to the fuel pick-up
And another in-line filter looks like this .... but I can't find where it is. Follow fuel line, it could be under hood or along frame The only other thing I can think of is a not-so-good connection to power the fuel pump. Intermittent loss of good connection
