ignition timing setting

Don't really know if this one has a distributor, but if it does, the usual--that is to say there is a connector called 'diagnostic' it's rectangular, need to jump 2+3 pins (going from memory) and use a golf tee to shut off the vacuum advance while plugging the vacuum leak created. Loosen the clamping bolt that holds the distributor (if they still have them) and use your timing light to set the timing ---7degrees tdc (look it up, printed on the cowl)....you never stated what year you have so I'm going to assume it is conventional ignition....also verify the pins that need to be jumped on the diagnostic plug. 2 and 3 as I recall- tighten the bolt replace the vacuum onto the advance and put the diagnostic cover back on...and you're done.
What year MR2 are you talking about? The AW-11, which is the original body style, the sleeker body style of 90-96, or the MR-S of mid-2000's?
