Compass and Temperature Gauge
11 Answers
Hey Dan, This is a common problem with the compass / ambient temperature display in Tacomas. (Toyota calls them 'accessory meters') There are two tiny surface mount components that become loose from the circuit board. We perform the repair and ship it back to you: http://www.siliconmethod.com Or, you can email me at repair [at] siliconmethod.com Thanks and good luck! Greg
This is common. The 510L chips come loose. Remove the gauge and resolder. Its very easy and takes only about 20 min. Just push the chip down a little and run your soldering iron along the edges.

I had the same issue and found that the fix that "oldno" mentions works. I had taken mine to the dealer and they wanted around $300 to fix it. I took it apart myself to see what I could do and fixed it within 20 minutes and at a cost of a little bit of solder.
Nice. I did the same thing, removed the unit, soldering ther right side of the 510 (only side I saw original solder) with just a little heat and when I plug it back in, it worked. Thanks
Same thing works great. The hardest part was finding a screwdriver tip it is a T 10. My 510 chip was upside down but apparently that doesn't matter. My neighbor has a pencil Solder and the 6040 Solder to use. My chip was separated from the board on the right side. It got a little fried soldering it back on but it works great. See the photos. Thanks!
I only have one 510. do I need two. if so where would I get a 510?

What is the procedure to remove the unit
Does this problem happen in Trail Blazers - compass is in the mirror.
I fixed mine, the compass works but the temp only shows dashes no temperature. Anyone know why?
I had the same problem with my 2008 tacoma TRD Sport. The compass and temp gauge didnt work. I remover the overhead dispkay and sure enough the chips were popped up,,,20 minute job,but I don't have a small enough solderer so I taped the d@mn thing with some painters tape and it worked for now, will solder it soon.

Thanks everyone for the posts, the solder fix worked on my 2008 Tacoma. In my case, just needed to heat up and reset one of the solder points on one of the 510 chips shown in the pics of this thread. Removal of the housing assembly requires removal of 1 screw in the sunglass holder compartment, then gently pry down the front end of the housing with a flathead screwdriver or blade of a putty knife. My cost was $0, so I appreciate the knowledge shared here.
