'85 Crown Vic. Trouble with Highbeams

Asked by Chris Jan 13, 2009 at 05:32 PM about the Ford Crown Victoria

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

so I'm driving home last night, and all of a sudden my headlights start flicking on and off... after muttering some profanities, I switched to my low beams and everything seemed to be fine... so I flipped the highbeams back on and drove down the road as if nothing happened... several Kms down the road, it starts happening again... so I flip back to the low beams, and all is well.

I jiggled the switch for the highbeams, I jiggled the headlight switch.. I also intentionally hit some rough road to see if they'd flicker... but nothing... worked like champs...

I know I must have a short somewhere... but anyone have any idea where? the dash indicator even flipped off when they went out...

Any ideas what might be wrong, or where one might start looking?

(Sealed beam "Silverstar" highbeams. GE "Nighthawk" lowbeams)

Thanks

try checking the fuse panel because you might need a new fuse. If it isn't that, then go to a public library and find a book on your car and look at the wiring diagrams for the headlights. I have a good feeling that it could possibly be the fuse. I hope my answer is much help to you

hey bud its the wiring harness guarenteed goes around the radiator on the corners or in through the fire wall...its shorting out just fixed mine...wiring harnesses in them are famous for that

That might be a good start... My Rad has had a bit of a leak, could be messing with the wires if it goes around there... Thanks! I was thinking it might be a relay getting old.
