Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Can anyone tell me what year model Escapes were offered with 4x4 with 4-lo.(hi&lo 4x4). I would like to buy a used Escape but don't know what years to look for?

The Ford Escape was never offered with true four wheel drive. It was either front wheel drive, or front wheel drive/all wheel drive.

Jon, Are you 100% sure. I test drove an Escape(possibly 2002) and it had a switch that said, Auto-4hi-4lo. Was I dreaming? The low range did work.

I'm sure they were never offered in 4X4 select hi-low range, I found this on the net for you copy/paste Quote "The Escape's Control Trac II four-wheel-drive system uses a rotary blade coupler (RBC) to split the power between the front and rear axles. The RBC is located at the end of a two-piece driveshaft mounted in front of the rear differential. Even when equipped with the 4WD system, the Escape's design, capability, and suspension is inclined to provide better handling and traction control on paved roads than off-road. It's clear that the Escape isn't designed to be a hard-core off-roader. Knowing the Escape's limited purpose, Ford and other cute/ute designers decided the extra expense and weight of a two-speed transfer case were not worth the off-road performance gains. Given this decision and the soccer-mom craze, it's very likely that single-speed will be seen more and more on concrete mountains." Found this on http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/brandpages/ford/131_0201_transfer_case_ford_escape_ford_sport_trac/index.html
