I have two of that generation. Is the vehicle the V6? Very good pushrod engine, but getting it to run perfectly smooth at idle is difficult, I have a 95 and 99. Check and clean the mass air flow sensor, the plug wires, the fuel filter, etc. But keep in mind the vehicle is 13 years old.
What do you mean you cannot get any reading with diagnostics? Is the port not working or do you just not have a check engine light?
also check into the IAC valve also known as Idle Air Control valve, it may be gummed up and need to be cleaned or replaced. did you change the plug wires as well as the plugs?
