my 2008 f250 diesel the display says i have "x' amount of miles before empty, x meaning single digits. However when i fill up it only takes 17 gallons. i believe the tank is a 30 gallon. Why?

when i fill up it says anywhere from 400 to 500 mile to empty and I only get half of that. it also says I get 18.5 mpg but I calculated 13.5
