It's the Fire Triangle: Fuel, Air, Heat. Without any one of the three there will be no fire. Is there fuel pressure - not gasoline present but the 40+ psi required. Is there spark at the plugs or in your case, are the coils being fired? Since it overheated, there is the issue of Air in the form of compression - did you blow the head gaskets and now there isn't enough compression to support combustion? A compression test will tell. It's possible that since the engine wouldn't fire on starting fluid (BTW - Starting Fluid is ALWAYS a bad idea. I know they sell the junk but, they sell cigarettes too), it sounds as though you may not be getting spark. How long did you drive it before it stopped running? What Engine size?
